Pinellas County, FL - Florida school districts are investigating teachers over social media posts made following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The Pinellas County School District confirmed that at least three teachers are being reviewed by the district’s Office of Professional Standards to determine whether the posts violated district policies or state rules.
Deputy Superintendent Stephanie Woodford said the reviews began after Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas sent a letter warning that any comments deemed “despicable” regarding Kirk’s death could result in sanctions.
Kamoutsas noted that teachers retain First Amendment rights, but posts that become public and undermine trust among students and families may affect professional conduct and classroom effectiveness.
Kirk, co-founder of the nonprofit Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during a college speaking event in Utah.
His alleged assailant was arrested Friday and faces charges.
After the commissioner’s letter, members of the public reported teachers who posted negative remarks about Kirk online.

The first reports came from Lee and Clay counties, with additional cases emerging statewide.
Woodford said each case is reviewed individually to determine whether the online statements disrupted the school environment.
Pasco County Superintendent John Legg said his district has not received reports of teachers posting about Kirk but will review any complaints.
The Pinellas Classroom Teachers Association advised staff to consider the impact of posts, photos, and likes, noting that digital activity can be traced and may reflect on both the individual and the school.
Critics of the state guidance have questioned the clarity of terms like “despicable” and how they will be enforced.
District officials continue to review each case while balancing professional standards and constitutional protections.
